About the Institute

The Institute of African Studies Hankuk University of Foreign Studies

Founded in 1977, the Institute of African Studies (IAS) at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) has been at the forefront of advancing African studies in Korea. As the nation’s first academic center dedicated to African research and education, the Institute fosters a deeper understanding of Africa’s diverse societies, histories, politics, economics, languages and literature.

The IAS promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration, working closely with scholars from overseas universities and research institutions. Through partnerships with institutions around the world, the Institute facilitates joint research projects, academic exchanges, and dialogue that reflect the richness and complexity of African realities today.

Committed to building a dynamic intellectual community, the IAS regularly hosts conferences, workshops, and seminars that bring together Korean and international scholars. Contributions from overseas scholars, including those specializing in African studies, are central to the Institute’s activities, enriching academic dialogue and strengthening global scholarly networks.

Through these initiatives, the IAS seeks to contribute not only to academic advancement but also to fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between Korea and the wider international community.

As part of HUFS’s broader mission to promote global knowledge and cross-cultural engagement, the Institute of African Studies remains dedicated to expanding academic frontiers and building enduring bridges between Korea, Africa, and the world.
