The Institute of African Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies is carrying out a consortium-based Humanities Korea (HK) 3.0 project in collaboration with the Institute of African Studies at Busan University of Foreign Studies, the France-Africa Research Institute at Jeonbuk National University,
and the Social Contribution Research Institute at Hallym University. Under the agenda titled “The MZ Generation in Africa and Nexus Humanities: A Study on the Dynamics of Africality and Globality,” the project seeks to explore how Africa’s youth are redefining identity and values in the midst of globalization, digitalization, and cultural hybridity.
The research examines the dynamic experiences of the African MZ generation through three key concepts
- knowledge
- power
- relations
focusing on how these manifest across four major areas: urban life, migration, digital spaces, and popular culture. In addition to field-based analysis, the project incorporates public perception surveys to further support and deepen the research in these four areas.
By analyzing the African MZ generation along the axes of Africality (local traditions and particularities) and Globality (global connectedness and interdependence), the study aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of their emerging roles and social meanings.
Grounded in extensive fieldwork and diverse methodological approaches, this project captures the transformative agency of the African MZ generation. Through these efforts, the consortium seeks to expand the frontiers of Korean humanities research and contribute to strengthening Korea’s standing within international scholarly discourse on Africa.
